Recently I watched a tutorial by Lloyd Alvarez at AETUTS showing how to take control of After Effects’ Shatter effect. I’ve been using this effect for 10 years but never needed to use a shatter map layer to control where and how a layer shatters, and that’s just what Lloyd’s tutorial demonstrates. This week, after researching Dark Knight graphics I noticed that the key art included an image of the bat logo shattering at the edges revealing a bright light source behind. Initially I considered recreating this in 3D but decided instead to use Shatter, and despite Shatter’s limitations, the result is quite acceptable. I plan to put together a tutorial soon to walk you through the finished look.

Wow, very impressing. How did you reveal the lights in the BG? Did you mask it out or is it really revealing by the shattering symbol?

Great idea for a tutorial, John! Can’t wait to see it.
Thanks for all you do here, by the way. Big fan of your work and this is my first comment. I bought one of your MILG DVDs and spent most of the weekend learning some really great stuff.
Thanks!

Thanks for your support Charlie, glad you like the site. Illd the light was created using Knoll Light Factory flares and is revealed as the bat breaks apart using the KLF obscuration setting.

Hey John, I just want it to say that I have been seen your work for almost two years and let me tell you, your work is so great and so distinctive and is unbelievable and I just want to know when is this “The Dark Knight” tutorial coming out. Other things, I don’t know if my PC but every time I try to view the seminars I got nothing on sound but some times it work perfectly and I was wondering if your going to put it online in QuickTime so we can see it with out any sound loss. Thanks for your page it is great keep it up and cheers from Puerto Rico.
