While I don’t necessarily agree with outright lying, in the past I have definitely said I had experience in something that I knew I could go home and study techniques up on to get the job done. If you’re gonna lie, at least with experience, you should be smart enough to know when your out of your realm.

“There are only two things”, my father once told me that he couldn’t stand in a person, “lying and stealing.” I agree with him. I’ve seen people stealing other people’s intellectual property and presenting it as there own (for instance copying tutorials), not cool. Rather than tell a client I can do something when I’m not sure, I tell them the truth, that I’m not sure but I think I can get it done for them, or I’ll tell them I know the theory of how but haven’t tried doing it. In the end honesty pays off. Your clients return with more work because they trust your honesty and your work ethic and know you won’t let them down. A reputation takes a long tome to build but just a second to destroy – think about it.
