Everyone who took the time and made an effort to display their work in this challenge is a winner. Choosing from the top 10 was not easy and after much deliberation we have decided to use Robert Leger’s entry as the title sequence for Unplugged. Robert based his animation on the existing style and colour palette and reworked it into a fun and stylish sequence. I’m looking forward to discussing the animation with Robert during his Unplugged interview. To all other entrants, once again thank you, and look out for my video review of your entries.

Congratulation!
Was interesting to follow this challenge.
Most works had nice AE effects and C4D stuff.. mograph and co
…but the best entries were the ones with good concepts/ideas and color schemes and design elements, that fit into this already existing design/identity.

Some professional stuff there. Although the winning entry is good….please consider reworking the cuts at the beginning. Seem a bit too harsh. I actually had to scroll back the video playback a few times until I realized that my video wasn’t skipping, but the first few cuts are so hard. Maybe a slight movement instead of the Plug Icon static shots (yes I know the particles are moving slighty).
December 14, 2009 at 6:05 am |
Ah…but now with music (I put my headphones on). Fits the music perfect. For some reason, without the sound it seemed to cut too many times to different views of the Icon before the main animation. But now hearing it with the music….I admit I was off on my first comment. Flows well with the music.

Hi John!
I really want to thank you for being so generous in sharing your knowledge. I just moved from Los Angeles to El Salvador as a self-supporting missionary to help people here, and to earn money I started a vfx business. I really don’t think I could have done it without inspiration and practical training from you and also from guys like Maltaannon.
Love the site, and the use of trapcode. I love making organic effects.
A question — how do you think that Robert created the 3d letters? Zaxwerks and then individually animate them?
Thanks again!
Jonathan Perkins
PS – Congrats Robert! It’s really is a beautiful piece of work.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for your support. I’m sure Robert will explain exactly how he constructed his entry during our interview. Best, John.

hello again,
well, i guess i will be recording my first tutorial then
when john and are done with the unplugged interview, i’ll think about how to set it up.
so be sure to check out my website http://www.robertleger.net very early in 2010… but i’m confident that john would announce the “making of” of his new podcast title on this very site, as well. so obviously you won’t miss it
thanks again for your kind comments,
Robert

Hi John,
I was waiting for your last posts about the entries of the challenge, but I haven’t seen them, and now that I’m looking for them on your website, I can’t find them either.
Have I missed anything ? Did you finally finish to comment all of them ?
(I’ve to say mine was one of them… :-/)
Thanks !
