Last month I broke down my first attempt at the freeze frame look. This month I did more freeze frame style animation, but with a very different look – watercolour.

As I mentioned in the previous breakdown, shot selection for this kind of look is very important. This month all of the selected shots were better suited for the look I had in mind, because the type was placed over the talent, rather than to the left or right.  Watch MovieRead more…

The look where a shot is freeze framed and graphics build around a cut-out element isn’t new, but surprisingly this was a first for me.

One of the challenges in this example was that some of the shots worked well with text, while others were less than ideal. With this type of project, if you aren’t choosing the shots for graphical treatment yourself, it’s best to work with the editor and recommend shots that work with the graphics. If that’s not possible then change the graphic style or “make” shots work, as you’ll see with The Sorcerer’s Apprentice below. Read more…

After 8 years with Foxtel Design, I recently accepted the position of Senior Designer at Foxtel Box Office – On Demand Movies, here at Foxtel in Sydney. Together with Gareth Chang and Brett Morris, both talented young designers, we get to flex our After Effects and Cinema 4D skills working on a wide range of movie graphic styles across various genres.

Over the coming months I’ll be showcasing graphics created using After Effects, Cinema 4D and a variety of plug-ins, by the team, some original and others influenced by existing spots. Read more…

Just completed, Foxtel Box Office’s (FBO) winter campaign in Cinema 4D.

With a Stars theme, the campaign includes a competition to win a trip for 2 to Cannes Film Festival. Given the theme, I suggested we use the tagline “follow the stars”. This has the dual meaning of following the logo stars throughout the promo (which represent FBO), and mingling with movie stars on the red carpet in Cannes. Read more…
